The timeline shifts back to reveal Sandra is actually a drug addict and parolee named Sandy. She was recruited and trained by , a master con artist, to seduce Tom and steal his money. However, Max eventually abandons her after the job is done.

Tom, a lonely bookstore owner, meets Sandra, a doctoral student. They fall in love, but Sandra soon reveals her brother is in deep trouble with a debt of $350,000. In a final confrontation, the characters are brought together by Tipsy (an accomplice). In a chaotic scene, Tom is seemingly shot and killed by Max during a struggle over the money. Panicked, Madeline and Max sign over the Hobbes fortune to Sandra (who was working with Tom) to buy her silence and escape.
