Set during the reign of Peter the Great, the story follows a young officer named Ivan Demarin. By the Tsar's order, Ivan is sent to the remote Siberian city of Tobolsk. Upon arrival, he and his regiment find themselves caught in a dangerous conspiracy involving local princes who are plotting to seize the gold of Yarkand. The situation escalates when they are surrounded by the fierce Dzugars (Zunghars) in a harsh, war-torn landscape where reinforcements are nowhere to be found.
