In a remote village, 11-year-old Touko wanders into the forbidden forest and is attacked by a "Fire Fiend". She is saved by a Fire Hunter named Haijuu , who is mortally wounded in the process. Before dying, he leaves behind his hunting dog, Kanata , and his glass sickle. Feeling responsible for his death and burdened by the village's disdain, Touko is tasked with traveling to the capital to return these mementos to the hunter's family.
