It focuses on a tense recording session where "Mother of the Blues" Ma Rainey (Davis) clashes with her white manager and producer over control of her music. Meanwhile, the ambitious trumpeter Levee (Boseman) pushes the band toward a more modern sound, leading to explosive personal and racial tensions within the recording studio.
