Most factory Remington 700 wood or synthetic stocks (like the ADL or BDL) are designed with a small "speed bump" or pressure pad at the tip of the forend.

A free-floating barrel is a design where the barrel and the stock do not touch at any point forward of the receiver. This setup allows the barrel to vibrate naturally and consistently—known as harmonics—whenever a shot is fired. When a stock touches the barrel, it can cause unpredictable shifts in the point of impact as the barrel heats up or the shooter applies different amounts of pressure on the forend.
