The modern LGBTQ+ rights movement owes much of its momentum to transgender activists. Historical flashpoints, such as the 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria Riot and the 1969 Stonewall Inn Uprising, were spearheaded by trans women of colour like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Despite this foundational role, the transgender community has historically faced marginalization even within queer spaces. Throughout the late 20th century, some mainstream gay and lesbian organizations distanced themselves from trans issues to pursue "respectability politics," focusing on marriage equality rather than the broader gender liberation sought by trans activists.
